How Uncle Sam Almost Lost World War II

The USA almost lost WWII in Europe. Taken by surprise in the Battle of the Bulge, Uncle Sam came close to being driven out of Europe. We all know the story of the 101st Airborne, besieged at Bastogne with 80% casualties refusing to surrender, and ultimately relieved by Patton’s 3rd Army. But how did we get there?

World War II was the last “Good War” and the last one the USA won. But the victory, such as it was, was due almost totally to the Red Army. Seven-eighths of the German & Axis Forces were on the Eastern Front. On D-Day, the Allies faced old men, young kids and Ukrainians.

Wars are determined by boots on the ground and armies willing to fight & die. But intelligence plays a key role. A Jewish spy network, code-named ‘Max’, under a White Russian general, Prince Anton Turkul, was thought by the Germans to have penetrated Stalin’s General Staff. It was thought that these ‘Fascist Jews’ were willing to work for the Nazis in return for lots of money and safety for their families. For example, key man Richard Lauder’s mother was moved from Austria to Bulgaria.

One problem for Hitler: The Jews of the Max network were mostly Communist double-agents. Working with Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, Max was able to penetrate the inner circles of the Third Reich. They did provide some ‘good’ intel but strictly controlled by the Communists. This true info was able to lull the Germans into a false sense of security.

Then the agents lured Nazi divisions into a series of traps. The first trap was Stalingrad, the second trap was the Battle of Kursk. In all, 70% of German divisions were destroyed on the Eastern Front largely via misleading info from Max

Now we come to the Battle of the Bulge. Marshall Zhukov, his Red Army forces at the German border, was planning the biggest military assault in history. But the Max network fed false info to the Germans that the Soviet forces were near collapse. So the Germans rushed as many forces that they could to the heretofore neglected Western Front.

The Germans also maintained radio silence as they as they moved their forces westward. Someone had tipped them off that the British had broken their codes. Nobody can prove who the traitor was. The Israelis, who inherited part of the Max network as key members defect to the Zionist cause after the war, think the traitor was Allen Dulles.

The rest is history.

It is correct to say that the Red Army did the heavy lifting in the war against Germany. Even without the Normandy invasion, the Wehrmacht was already in retreat in June of 1944. However, it is an exaggeration to suggest that the Battle of the Bulge, if successful, would have driven the Allies out of Western Europe. As you note, most of the German military was on the Eastern Front. The Germans did not have the military strength to reoccupy Western Europe. German sources of oil were overrun in Romania. Their cities were 90% demolished. Even with the army units diverted from the East, the most the Germany army could accomplish was to temporarily push back the allies and delay the inevitable Nazi defeat. By December, 1944, there was absolutely no hope for Germany and it was just a question of time.

I was more interested in telling the story of the Max Network and the role of intelligence. Also, the role of Allen Dulles as a possible traitor.

I always thought that “Ultra” was Martin Boreman!

the last war the U.S. won? What about the first golf war? the cold war? the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan Now?

Again, the point of the piece was to talk about possible treason enabling the Germans to launch the Battle of the Bulge. Arguing about subsequent wars would be the subject of another story.
